- Identify your students' level of proficiency... identify those who talk more and those who talk less... they come in handy during observation...
- Discuss with your school supervisor bout the syllabus and ask for advice on academic matter...
- Go through the textbook and scan through the activity available in it...
- Move around the school and locate all the facilities that you could use for classroom learning and teaching... AV Room, Computer Room, Projector, Hall, Classrooms, etc...
- Plan your lesson ahead...
Preparing Lesson:
- Check the syllabus... Ask the teacher on where he/she has stopped... continue from there...
- Look into the textbook... what it has for you... ask yourself, is it enough...
- Look at the theme... think of something that could be related to it...
- Write your lesson plan... the best is PPP... Presentation/Practice/Production... for me lah
- Plan your lesson accordingly... don't be over ambitious... an hour lesson with 6 objectives... killing the students ah...
- Textbook: don't ask the students to read/copy/answer in the textbook... you should retype/photocopy/rewrite the activity on mahjong paper/word cards/on projector...
- Pictures: you could download them from Internet or draw by yourself... At least A3 size... don't spoil the students' eyes... 40 in a class... large pictures attract attention...
- Radio: teach listening to either dialogue/songs/speech/instruction... could use this with worksheets...
- Newspaper: teach reading (advertisements/tv guide/movie guide/reports/comic stripts/horoscope/etc...) teach writing (respond to comments/letters/heart-to-heart/job ad/etc...)
- Map: teach reading using the entire map... one activity each for intro section... one for main map... one for zoom in size map... one for interesting places... one for food... one for important contacts... skimming/scanning/identifying main idea/predicting outcome/etc... tested here... TESL Pioneer Batch knows this as my group (Rita, Sri, Amrin, Kareen - miss you all) planned this activity for Mdm Shanina...
- Guitar (Red did this)... Singing (Intan did this)... puppet (rita used it)... mask (kareen used it)... dolls (kareen brought them to class to teach preposition... remember!!!)... hahaha... how creative were we from the first batch...
- Others... you plan and add on... sleepy d!
- Do not ask students to copy down exercises into notebook... you need to photocopy your worksheet... only lazy teacher does this... copying new vocabulary and practise dictionary skills are allowed...
- Do not ask students to draw as a production activity... drawing is not a language skill... if you want the studs to draw... provide instruction whether written or spoken step-by-step to teach LINKERS... First, draw a circle on the A4 paper. Next, draw... After that,... Finally,... (language skills involved)...
- Do not use materials per se from the textbook... Come on... textbook is just a guide and it contains sample activity... you as a teacher needs to be wise and be creative to bring new ideas to the lesson... don't be lazy...
- Do not use only mahjong papers and manila cards in teaching... So BORING... are these the only AVA taught to you...
- Do not stand only at the front of the class during activity... you need to walk about to provide assistant... REMEMBER... Teacher as Facilitator...
- Do not stand like a tree in front of the class (kayu...)... or cross your arms... or put your palms in the pocket (what are you scratching...)... Be Lively... If your are lethargic, your studs to got lethargic... REMEMBER... "Like Father, Like Son"... hence, "Like Teacher, Like Students"... teacher is the best actor/actress... what have you learned in theater...
